The Asian century?

China has grown in an impressive manner, 500 million people have overcome poverty in only three decades. And it is not only China. Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand have also achieved almost miraculous growth. Many experts are convinced that the 21st century is the Asian century, but not Michael Auslin. He argues that Asia will be weakened by important military, economic, environmental and demographic risks.  Watch his interview with Moisés Naím. 

El Comandante

El Comandante is Sony's most ambitious production to date for Latin America. The series was conceived three years ago by Moisés Naím, who is also a producer of the show and a newcomer to the world of television. "It is not a documentary nor a biography in the strict sense of the word. It is a work of fiction based on Chavez's life", Naím says. El Comandante is set to air in the region in the coming days and in the United States in the spring. Read more about El Comandante. 

Sprint buys part of Tidal

Sprint CEO, Marcelo Claure announced the company's acquisition of a 33% share of Tidal. The music streaming company owned by singers such as Jay Z, Beyonce and Madonna will now be available to all Sprint customers. 

Latin America must join the digital revolution

During the World Economic Forum, Luis Alberto Moreno talked to Portafolio about the upcoming challenges facing the world and the region. He emphasized the importance of joining the digital revolution because he believes that the question now is: how do we integrate the world so that technology benefits everybody?

Cinépolis increases global sales

Cinépolis general director, Alejandro Rámirez Magaña shared the remarkable growth in ticket sales in 2016 - up 19.1% worldwide, for a total of 312 million. This positions Cinpolis as the second highest grossing movie company in the world. 

An Agricultural Impulse

IESA and Asoportuguesa signed an agreement which aims to boost the managerial skills of those that work in the agricultural sector. Gustavo Roosen, president of IESA, affirmed that this project is "indispensable for Venezuela" and hopes it will increase agricultural productivity. 

IguanaFix raises $16 million

Matías Recchia, leading the on-demand service provider and home improvement marketplace IguanaFix, announces the latest round of $16 million in Series B venture funding led by Temasek, the global Singaporean investment company, with participation from Endeavor Catalyst. 

New president for Ferroglobe

Javier López Madrid has been named president of Ferroglobe, the merger between the American Globe Specialty Metals and the Spanish Ferroatlantica. He has been with the company for two years, serving as its vice president. 

Elsztain: A full-time optimist

During an interview with "5 en 5," Eduardo Elsztain spoke about Macri's presidency and its effect on the country. "I believe that the changes... will be small, constant, but firm [and] will change our economy," he said. He also emphasized the ability of the Argentine people to overcome difficult situations, due to their tumultuous history. 

Errázuriz, the politician

As 2016 came to a close, Jorge Errázuriz became the newest member of the Ciudadanos political party in Chile and simultaneously announced his departure from the business world to completely dedicate himself to politics. 

Coppel is Recognized for his support for education

Agustin Coppel was recognized in Sinaloa for his generous support for education. The Sinaloan business leader has donated 15 million pesos to five schools situated in marginalized areas of the state. He hopes to help more and more schools each year. 

Juntodos.com

Gloria de Kriete Foundation launched the platform juntodos.com with the goal of fundraising for 25 diverse social projects in El Salvador. The platform will allow users to learn about various social programs in need of funds. Roberto Kriete emphasized that this initiative is meant to support projects whose success is impeded by a lack of resources. 

Development Banks are Not in Crisis

In mid-January, Enrique García spoke at the IV Annual Conference organized by CAF and LSE about the future of development banks in the world. "Even though globalization is in crisis, development banks are not. On the contrary, they now have a variety of opportunities, not only to finance programs but also in terms of their capacity to promote more solid institutions."

Carlos Rodriguez Pastor sat down with Trome to talk about Peru's future, how he spends his spare time and how he advises young entrepreneurs. "The day we stop learning, we stop living...technology is changing so fast that if we don't have an open mind to continue learning, we won't be able [to succeed]."

Pescarmona recibe premio "Gerardo Lasalle"

Enrique Pescarmona was recognized with the "Gerardo Lasalle" prize, a tribute to the disappeared industrial engineer and founder of the National Engineering Academy. With this prize, Pescarmona was honored for his "important merits" in industrial development, all accomplished through the companies that he has led, and in the formation of human resources and the development of advanced technology. 

Cumplo: Ya no es startup

 Founder and CEO Nicolas Shea celebrated Cumplo's fifth anniversary. The company is no longer a startup, with almost 100,000 pesos in credit financing and a network of 3200 investors, it is now the biggest crowdfunding platform in Latin America. 

Open English's new endeavor

Open English has announced a new partnership with Endeavor. The English teaching platform led by Andres Moreno will be giving $250,000 USD in scholarships that will be administered by Endeavor to young professionals and entrepreneurs who wish to improve their English skills.
